IIT Madras is one of the premium centers of technological institutes in the country. The Institute was founded with the technical assistance of Germany. Indian Institute of Technology Madras was formally established in 1959.

The founder of this institute was Prof. Humayun Kabir, Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs. It is one among the primary institutes of national importance in higher technological education, basic and applied research. The former name of this institute was IIT Chennai. It was later changed to its present form when the city name was changed from Madras to Chennai in the year 1996.
