Special Education

Special Education is that component of education which employs special instructional methodology, learning-teaching aids, instructional materials, and equipment to meet educational needs of children with specific learning disabilities.


Early identification of a child with special needs is an important part of a special education teacher's job. Early intervention is very essential in educating children with disabilities.
Remedial instruction or Remediation aims at improving an ability or skill in a student. Techniques for remedial instruction may include providing more explanation or practice, repeating information, and devoting more time to working on the skill. Students are classified under one of the categories, and special education teachers are prepared to work with specific groups.

Today due to global competitiveness, education scenario in India is fast changing. Special education India is also catching importance and different government agencies are working hard to make it available to masses. There are almost 37 diploma courses in the field of special education in India some of the institutes and colleges offer courses like B.Ed as well. All these courses and programmes are governed and regulated by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) - a legislative body under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.



Providing access to fundamental education is a duty the Indian state that has taken upon itself. Thus the government has taken various measures to offer access to education to all categories of students. Therefore the differently able children are provided special education in India so that they can seriously engage in improving the quality of their life. With the advancement of technology, Special education in India for mentally challenged or physically disabled is also fast improving.



Special education teachers work with children and youths who have a variety of disabilities. A small number of special education teachers work with students with mental retardation or autism, mainly teaching them life skills and basic literacy. However, the majority of special education teachers work with children with mild to moderate disabilities, using the general education curriculum, or modifying it, to meet the child's individual needs. Most special education teachers instruct students at the elementary, middle, and secondary school level, although some teachers work with toddlers and infants. Special educators provide programs and courses for specific learning disabilities, speech or language impairments, hearing impairments, mental retardation, emotional disturbance, multiple disabilities, visual impairments, autism, combined deafness and blindness, traumatic brain injury, and other health impairments.
