National Institute of Technology (NIT-S) was established in 1967 as a joint venture of Government of India and Government of Assam.

It was formerly known as Regional Engineering College (REC), Silchar. It was upgraded to the status of Deemed University and was renamed as NIT from a Regional Engineering College(REC) in year 2002. The University is recognised by UGC and it is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). The University presently offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in various branches of engineering.
