Bhavnagar University was established on 1978 by the state government of Gujarat for imparting quality education in wide- ranging disciplines such as Science, Arts, Commerce, Engineering, Medicine, Management, Rural Studies and Law stream.

Bhavnagar University is a member of The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and is fully recognised and funded by UGC. NAAC rated B Grade to the university.
The University has 20 Departments and 4 Recognized Institutes and Research Centres. Full time PhD Programme, research and consultancy are carried out in various departments of the University according the demands of the economic situations and crisis. The University has also started several self finance courses in its post graduate departments for post graduate degrees.
