IIT Guwahati is come in 6th member in the IIT family. The Guwahati (IITG) was placed by Government of India in 1994 under an Act of Parliament for providing technological and scientific education in the country. This IIT is prepared with the state of the art infrastructure and scientific and contemporary instruments; IT Guwahati has caught up with the excellence of education of the rest of IITs within a astonishingly short span of time. The institute's presents study programmes in a numeral of Scientific, Engineering and Technological disciplines.

Academic program
This premier institute presently conducts the following Programmes in the bachelors level:
- Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech ): Four years ( 8 semesters ) programme in:
- Biotechnology
- Chemical Engineering
- Chemical Science and Technology
- Civil Engineering
- Computer Science & Engineering
- Electronics & Communication Engineering
- Electronics and Electrical Engineering
- Engineering Physics
- Mathematics & Computing
- Mechanical Engineering
- Bachelor of Design (B.Des.): Four years ( 8 semesters )
- Students are selected for admission to the above programmes through combined Entrance Examination for IITs (IIT-JEE).
Master program
Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati currently conducts the following programmes at the post-graduate level leading to the Masters degree:
- Master of Technology (M.Tech.): Two years ( 2-semester coursework + 2-semester project work) prgramme in the following departments
- Biotechnology
- Chemical Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Computer Science & Engineering
- Electronics and Communication Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Master of Design (M.Des.):
Two years ( 4 semesters) programme in the Department of Design.
- Admissions to the MTech and MDes programmes are held once a year - in July.
- Master of Science (M.Sc.):
Two years ( 4 semesters) programme in:
- Chemistry
- Physics
- Mathematics and Computing

Two years ( 4 semesters) programme in the Department of HSS.

Campus
Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati's campus is on a sprawling 285 hectares plot of land on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra around 20 kms. It is situated from the heart of the city. With the grand Brahmaputra on one side, and with hills and huge open spaces on others, the campus offers a perfect setting for learning. While the campus construction programme will finish at the end of the tenth five year plan, students' hostels, faculty and staff quarters, and a guest house have previously been built.
