The Indian institute of technologies or IIT Kharagpur was the first of the seven IITs, established in 1951. It is the largest and oldest IIT in India. The Institute is position as the top engineering college in the country.

Campus is a township of about 20,000 populations. The Technology and Science Entrepreneurs Park (STEP) provides infrastructure amenities to alumni who want to become entrepreneurs but lack infrastructure to start their own corporation.

IIT Kharagpur structure
IIT KGP has total 19 academic departments, 8 multi-disciplinary centers and 13 schools that have been declared as centers of brilliance. At current, IIT Kharagpur has nearly 470 faculty members, 1933 employees, and around 5500 students.
IIT Kharagpur Admission
Admission to dissimilar programmes of the institute is basis the entrance exams. Admission to M.S. and PhD courses is first and foremost through interview. The students are, however, also necessary to take written tests. The undergraduate programmes of the institute need applicants to sit for the combined Entrance Examinations. Candidates qualifying through IIT-JEE can choose B.Tech, double Degree programme, and Integrated M.Sc. course at the institute. 15 percent of the seats are reserved for scheduled caste students and another 7.5 percent for those belonging to scheduled tribes. The entrance in post graduate programmes of the institute is through Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. Other exams for admission to the postgraduate courses are JMET for management studies and JAM for M.Sc..
Placement
Students of IIT Kharagpur have a preference for financial and IT sectors when it comes to placements. At current date, organizations in the core industry functions such as IT, research and development and manufacturing have been the chief recruiters at IIT Kharagpur.
