|
Vocational education refers specifically to vocational courses and programmes offered in school at the level of class 11 and 12.
|
The basic purpose of education is to make us good human being, good loyal citizen and finally fit to work in the skills what we learn in our study in our schools or colleges.
|
In some schools Vocational Education starts from the 8th standard. Vocational education is a preparation for the skilled jobs, this is the preparation based on practical and manual activities. The learner directly participates and develops expertise in a particular group of techniques or technology and often referred as technical education.
|
Vocational training is to impart specialized knowledge and skills and instilling social and political attitudes and behaviour patterns essential for successful economic activities by people engaged in dependent employment, self-employment or subsistence work. Vocational training can be of various types, depending on the way it has been acquired.
Vocational Education in India
Vocational educational in India aims to develop skilled manpower through diversified courses and programmes to meet the requirements and expectations of mainly the unorganized sector and to instill self-employment skills in people through a large number of self employment oriented courses. Vocational education in India is imparted through Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and polytechnics.
One of the weaknesses of Indian education system is that it does not gives due importance to vocational education. As a result there is a mismatch between the skilled manpower required and skilled manpower available. Every year we churn out millions of graduates who do not have the specific skill sets required by the market. If this trend continues it would hurt our economic growth in the long run. To change this situation first we need changing our mindset. In India, people are obsessed with attaining a graduation degree and usually look down upon vocational education. This has resulted in a situation where on the one hand there are scores of unemployed graduates and on the other hand there is a huge shortage of skilled workers such as plumbers, electricians etc.
Vocational Education in Abroad
Vocational education is also called Career and Technical Education (CTE), prepares learners for jobs that are based in manual or practical activities, traditionally non-academic and totally related to a specific trade, occupation or vocation, hence the term, in which the learner participates. It is sometimes referred to as technical education, as the learner directly develops proficiency in a particular group of techniques or technology.
Mostly, Vocational Education have 80% practical training with 20% theory so students gets more exposure or real life experience at the education level itself and when they come out of the study the situation in the market is not hidden to them. They easily fit themselves in the changing environment without hassles. With the establishment of vocational college for various vocations, the trend of our educational system would be put on the rails, and it could be expected to be fruitful.
